Milam Byers, Chaplain to the Music Industry
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” – Ecclesiastes 4:9, 10
The people of the music industry have tremendous influence. Many are called to be Christ’s ambassadors to the culture at-large and are given a platform to publicly display their faith in Jesus. But too often, artists and musicians are the most misunderstood and spiritually neglected. They are also some of the most exploited and overexposed within the Church. In addition to all of this, there is very little to no presence of a pastor or shepherd to care for this community. That’s why a chaplain committed to their care, encouragement and growth is among the most vital ministries to evangelizing the culture. How do we accomplish this?
AVAILABILITY There is a reason that chaplains are standard for the military, professional sports teams, hospitals and many corporations–we all need someone to walk with us through the ups and downs of life. My goal is to always provide that same availability as a chaplain to the music industry–A trusted advisor in an all too often untrustworthy environment. One who encourages, prays, and helps navigate through difficult seasons and decisions. JESUS All of the care, counsel and encouragement is through the lens of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I believe Jesus is truly our only Hope, the only One who can fulfill all of our longings, purposes and dreams. But no matter where you are on your journey, from atheism to a committed follower of Jesus, I am available to you.
COMMUNITY I’ve spent the last few years bringing artists and crew together through corporate Bible studies and small group gatherings. I believe that more can be accomplished together than individually and that we desperately need one another on this unpredictable road. Corporate gatherings give us a break from the performance-driven world that surrounds our lives and careers.
PERSONAL A lot of what I do is one-on-one counseling, both in Nashville and on the road. Most conversations are about the tension that exists between life as a Christian and a performer, but we can talk about anything. Some guys need to know how to be a Godly father and husband while some are battling temptation and addiction. Whatever the case, we put things into a Biblical perspective and help them to see how Jesus can and will transform our whole person.
PERSPECTIVE As a former artist and someone who has spent 10 years professionally touring, I not only speak the same language but I know the struggles and temptations inherent to this lifestyle all too well. I make myself available to go out on the road for several days at a time, as needed and upon the request of the artist.
Milam Byers, the founder and director of The Reversal, has spent the last dozen years involved in the music industry in some form or the other. He spent nearly 10 years as a full-time touring musician and knows the challenges, struggles and lifestyle well. Milam began The Reversal in May, 2010 after hearing and experiencing, all too often, the stories of those turning away, broken marriages, weary souls, calloused hearts, and desperation for the Word of God within this community.
Milam lives in Nashville with his wife Ashley and their 3 sons; Gunnar (6), Remy (4) and Ryder-John (6 months).
