I was struck this morning by the tension of two thoughts:
- I am fully known by God;
- He chose me.
But these truths are not conflicting or exclusive to God.
‘…he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.’ Eph 1:4
Religion lies. It fools us into believing that we can somehow manipulate God into blessing, forgiving or loving us.
Your performance is no good here.
There is no one to fool.
In Christ we are fully known, fully fractured and fully forgiven (Eph 1:7).
- He saved me…even while His enemy (Rom 5:10).
- There is no performance…no charade…no hiding place (Ps 139:7).
- He knows me better than even I know myself (Ps 139:4).
- He bore my shame,
- my guilt,
- my apathy,
- all of my deceptions,
- all of everything I spend so much energy trying to hide (1 Peter 2:24)
David sang of God’s omniscience & omnipresence in Psalm 139:
O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.
How do these ancient lyrics hit you?
Intimidating yet comforting?
Terrifying and at the same time wonderful?
Because of Jesus…’Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.’ (Heb 4:16)
YOU ARE NAMED.
YOU ARE KNOWN.
YOU ARE LOVED.
Spurgeon on the Omniscience of God:
Man is all outside to God. With heaven there are no secrets. That which is done in the private chamber of the heart is as public as the streets before the all-seeing eye.
Hide nothing from him, for you can hide nothing.
